Libel Insurance for Specialist and Low Circulation Books and Magazines
WRITE GUARD POLICIES
Make no mistake - a claim for damages in a libel case can ruin a publishing business far quicker than a fire or a flood and it may even lead to the editor, writer or publisher losing his own assets in order to meet the cost of a judgement against them.
So it makes sense to take adequate Libel Insurance as well as insuring against the other better recognised risks such as fire, flood and liability. Libel Insurance is not cheap but using our expertise can minimise the cost.
TO START THE BALL ROLLING - Here is a check list:
If you are an existing publication;
Send one or two recent editions of the publication.
Tell us your circulation figures and your distribution area, e.g. the villages in south Gloucester or worldwide including the US and Canada.
How long have the present publishers been publishing the paper.
Have there been any claims or any indication of a claim.
Who, if anyone, provides your existing libel insurance cover.
If you are a new publication or a book yet to be published;
Have you produced a mock-up? If so please let us have a copy.
What will be the print run for the initial editions.
Could you provide cvs for the editorial staff.
What plans are there, if any, to have solicitors vet the publication.
In all cases tell us if there is an associated website and if contributions can be made electronically without editorial intervention. Based on this information we will be able to ascertain the best insurer to approach on your behalf.
